Welcome to Tides Counselling

A confidential, compassionate space to explore the challenges in your life

I provide short and long term therapy to adults over 18, with online or in-person appointments. I have a BSc Honours Degree in Integrative Counselling awarded in 2012 and am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

How can counselling help?

You're probably seeking counselling because something doesn't feel right. Pain from the past or worry about the future may be making it hard to enjoy the present. You may be feeling a confusing range of emotions all at once. If you're unable to talk to your partner or to family or friends, you may also be lonely and isolated. Whatever you're feeling, I can help you cope and move forward with your life.

What happens in counselling?

I provide a confidential, compassionate, and safe space to help you understand what you are experiencing and why. Together we'll explore your feelings, thoughts and beliefs, and work to untangle them. This will often involve looking at whether making changes to how you think and act can help you move forward.

Some frequently asked questions

What happens first?

I offer a free initial telephone consultation to discuss your needs, answer any questions you may have about counselling, and make sure you feel comfortable that we can work together. After that, we can agree a regular day and time for your counselling sessions. I'll also ask you to sign a standard counselling agreement which we'll go over together in the first session.

When can I have a counselling session?

I offer counselling sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, including evening appointments. I also offer appointments on Saturday mornings between 9 am and 1 pm. Please let me know if family, work, or other commitments are making it difficult for you to arrange counselling and I'll do my best to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Do you offer in-person counselling?

I offer in-person appointments. I am based near Woodbridge, Suffolk.

What will it cost?

I charge £50 for a one hour session. Payment is by bank transfer before each session. I also offer a limited number of reduced-fee sessions. Please ask for current availability.

What if I can’t make it to a session?

You must give a minimum of 24 hours’ notice by phone, text or email when cancelling an appointment, otherwise the full session fee is payable. If you want to change your appointment time, I'll do my best to find a different time for you that week. However, you must give a minimum of 24 hours’ notice if you would like to change, otherwise the full session fee is payable.

Does what we say in counselling remain confidential?

Everything you say will remain confidential, except in very exceptional circumstances, including if it seems to me that you or others are in danger or at risk of being harmed. I will explain what these circumstances are in our first session. I am required by professional standards and ethics to monitor my own practice by attending regular supervision, but at no time will I disclose your name or any identifiable information to my supervisor. My supervisor is also bound by a duty of confidentiality.

Will there be a written record of what I say?

I keep brief notes of our sessions and you are entitled to see these notes.

Do you offer couples counselling?

No.

Do you offer counselling for young people under the age of 18?

No.

Will you give me advice?

Rather than giving you advice, I'll help you explore your feelings, thoughts, and beliefs to work out for yourself how to move forwards. At times I may offer you information, for example, on practical steps to help you deal with anxiety, but I won't tell you what to do or think or feel.

What will we talk about?

Our sessions will be guided by you and what you bring to each session. What we talk about will depend on what you are seeking help with. Often counselling involves talking about past and current life events, the things you are finding difficult, your feelings and thoughts, your relationships, and your childhood.

What kind of counsellor are you?

I practise “person-centred” counselling, which is a type of humanistic therapy. Humanistic therapies focus on self-development and personal growth. I'll work to understand your experience from your perspective. I believe that, with the right support, you have the inner resources to reach your full potential and become your true self. Person-centred counselling can help bring lasting change, including greater self-awareness and self-understanding, improved self-reliance and self-esteem, healthier relationships, and an improved ability to express yourself. In our initial session, I will clarify with you what you are hoping to gain from counselling.

Sometimes I bring in other types of counselling if this is appropriate. For example, elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can be useful when dealing with depression and anxiety.
